چکیده
A previously described isolation procedure for collagen of the marine sponge Chondrosia reniformis Nardo was modified for scaling-up reasons yielding 30% of collagen (freeze-dried collagen in relation to freeze-dried sponge). Light microscope observations showed fibrous structures. Transmission electron microscopy studies proved the collagenous nature of this material: high magnifications showed the typical periodic banding-pattern of collagen fibres. However, the results of the amino acid analysis differed from most publications, presumably due to impurities that still were present. In agreement with earlier studies, sponge collagen was insoluble in dilute acid mediums and all solvents investigated. Dispersion of collagen was facilitated when dilute basic mediums were employed. The acid–base properties of the material were investigated by titration. Furthermore, a sponge extract was incorporated in two different formulations and compared with their extractfree analogues and a commercially available collagen containing product with respect to their effects on biophysical skin parameters. None of the preparations had a noticeable influence on the physiological skin surface pH. Skin hydration increased only slightly. However, all tested formulations showed a significant increase of lipids measured by sebumetry. q 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The water swelling and drug diffusion from initially hydrophilic, glassy polymer matrices were modeled using concentration-dependent diffusion equations for water and drug. The transport equation for water incorporated a relaxation-dependent mechanism. These equations were solved with an appropriate boundary condition incorporating a relaxation-dependent Deborah number. Experimental results fro...

Polymeric micelles have recently emerged as a novel promising colloidal carrier for the targeting of poorly water soluble and amphiphilic drugs. Polymeric micelles are considerably more stable than surfactant micelles and can solubilize substantial amounts of hydrophobic compounds in their inner core. Due to their hydrophilic shell and small size they sometimes exhibit prolonged circulation tim...

Lipid emulsion particles containing 10% of medium chain triglycerides were prepared using 2% w/w of a mixture 1:1 w/w of purified soya phosphatidylcholine and 2-hexanoyl phosphatidylcholine as emulsifier mixture, for use as drug carriers. The mean droplet sizes of emulsions, prepared using an Ultra Turrax or a high-pressure homogenizer, were about 288 and 158 nm, respectively, compared with 380...

The availability of large molecular weight proteinand peptide-based drugs due to the recent advances in the ®eld of molecular biology has given us new ways to treat a number of diseases. Synthetic hydrogels offer a possibly effective and convenient way to administer these compounds. Hydrogels are hydrophilic, three-dimensional networks, which are able to imbibe large amounts of water or biologi...

Recent results indicate that 'regulators of G-protein signalling' may contribute to the generation of receptor-specific patterns of cytosolic Ca2+ oscillations by associating with specific receptors, accelerating G-protein inactivation and responding to changes in cytosolic Ca2+.
